Nitinol superelastic bars and rods are about 55-56% nickel and 44-45% titanium, an almost equiatomic alloy. Their mechanical properties include excellent superelasticity up to 8-10% strain without permanent deformation. Tensile strength is 895-1,900 MPa, Young’s modulus is 28-41 GPa (depending on the phase), and fatigue resistance is excellent. Its phase transformation from austenite to martensite results in its shape-memory and superelastic behavior. The transformation temperatures are normally engineered within a range of -20°C and 100°C. It is highly corrosion-resistant and finds widespread application in the biomedical, aerospace, and industrial fields.
